Protein Power Book Review

Protein Power by Dr. Michael and Dr. Mary Eades

Most of you have heard of "The ZONE" by Dr. Barry Sears. Well Protein Power is kind of one step up. It's a bit more technical (and technically accurate), but is also still an easy read. Once you read some of the facts in this book, you'll wonder how the "authorities" could have ever come up with the high carb, low fat, "food pyramid" way of eating. Here's what a couple other readers had to say about this book:

***********
Having begun this plan 5 months ago, I must admit that I entered into it with some degree of skepticism. It seemed too good to be true that I could finally eat some of the foods I had abandoned in preference of the high-carbohydrate, low fat diet touted by the nutrition intelligentsia of today.
After having lost 40 pounds (39 of them in body fat) and 10 inches off my waist - you read correctly - 10 inches, I must say that this is no fad diet. It is a lifestyle - and one that I can stick to, for a change.

My cholesterol level has dropped from 210 to 176, with improvement in the HDL/LDL ratio. The overall effect is that my risk of heart disease has DECREASED, not increased (as the naysayers would have you to believe).

My doctor has carefully reviewed the plan and analyzed my protein to carbohydrate ratio and has determined that there is no danger of damage to my internal organs due to ketosis.

Granted, this is not a politically correct diet. The vegetarian community would have you believe that you will keel over having a heart attack after going on this diet, but the lab results don't lie and the facts are that I am less likely to develop heart disease now than I was on a high-carb, low fat diet.

........After 6 weeks, I am now at 177 pound dressed, lost 2 inches off my wasit and am feeling much better. All of this was done with virtually no exercizing (and I have a desk job). At my last doctors visit on January 7, 1999, my blood pressure was the lowest it has ever been. I had a full blood test over a year ago. I plan on having another one in a few months to determine if the cholesterol has dropped and what the ratios of HDL to LDL's are.
In conclusion, I highly recommend the book because: 1)It is easy to read. 2)Has many foods fro which to choose. 3)Has numerous discussions on civilizations that changed from protein to grain diets and the effects on health. 4) Discusses many of the cooking oils and other foods that affect diet and health and provides easy to follow recommendations. 5) You don't feel hungry all the time on this plan. It also provides a list of the right low carbohydrate foods to snack on.

I have discussed this book with several different "experts" in the fields of nutrition, biology, and phisiology, and although most of these "experts" write off Atkins as a nut without solid data, and say that Sears is a bit of an oversimplification, most of them agree the Eades know what they're talking about.
